More and more people in Germany suffer from Cancer, almost 500.000 people are newly diagnosed with the disease every year. The sad statistics are led by breast cancer and prostate cancer: breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in women, prostate cancer in men, followed by colon cancer and lung cancer in both sexes. "Many different factors can play a role in the development of cancer. In addition to a genetic predisposition, which is often found in younger breast cancer patients, our lifestyle can also increase the risk of developing cancer. For example, being overweight, smoking and alcohol, as well as excessive sun exposure, have been proven to promote cancer," warns Dr. Reinhold Lunow, internist and medical director of the practice clinic Bornheim, near Cologne and Bonn. “Our team of doctors informs patients who come to our clinic for treatment about these risk factors. Cancer screening come, of course.”

Seeing cancer prevention as an opportunity

Cancer screening is used to determine a possible health risk before the first signs of the disease are noticeable to the patient. The aim of cancer screening is to detect certain precancerous conditions or a tumor at an early stage of the disease in order to prevent cancer or to be able to initiate effective therapy at an early stage. "This often makes treatment less stressful for the patient, the consequences of the disease can be limited and the success of the therapy increased. Therefore, the examinations offered for annual cancer screening should definitely be taken advantage of, as should a general health check at least every two years - regardless of whether you have statutory or private insurance," recommends Dr. Lunow.

The practice clinic for diagnostics and preventive medicine in Bornheim offers its patients the most modern diagnostics in the context of cancer prevention, including various ultrasound screenings (e.g. thyroid, pancreas, stomach, liver, kidneys, prostate, testicles, etc.) and laboratory tests. "If the results of the cancer screening actually indicate a suspicion of cancer, we have further diagnostic procedures to coordinate the optimal treatment based on the findings - if necessary in close cooperation with other experts such as radiologists and oncologists. If the cancer is detected early, the patients are often still pain-free and many gentle treatment options are possible, the chances of recovery for those affected increase enormously. An opportunity that should not be missed," emphasizes Dr. Lunow.

Cancer prevention encourages a more conscious life

In most cases, the results of the cancer screening will be normal. Nevertheless, the prevention by no means for nothing! "Then you can leave our practice with a positive feeling and don't need to feel guilty about not having taken advantage of the opportunities for cancer prevention. In addition, many patients live more consciously afterwards and thus act as role models for others and can, for example, motivate their partners, relatives or friends to also go for the important cancer prevention," sums up the medical director of the Bornheim practice clinic.
