While men usually complain of severe chest pain during heart attacks, women are more likely to experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, upper abdominal pain and back pain. The typical chest pain that lasts longer than 5 minutes and feels as if a vice is squeezing the chest is not always present in women.
Women are now equally likely to suffer from Heart attack as men. However, the heart attack occurs about 10 years later than in men. Women are usually between 65 and 75 years old. Men are at high risk from the age of 55. Until the menopause, women are better protected by estrogens. Because the symptoms are often different from those in men, heart attacks in women are often not recognized until too late. However, a heart attack should be treated within the first three hours, otherwise there is a risk that part of the heart muscle will die as a result of the blocked blood vessel.
