sonography of the abdomen

Abdominal sonography is an ultrasound examination of the abdominal cavity. 'Abdomen' is derived from the Latin and means belly.

This method is the basic examination for diagnosing the abdominal organs.

Abdominal sonography can be used to visualize the following organs: liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidney, urinary bladder and abdominal aorta. Air-filled organs such as the stomach and intestines cannot be visualized quite as well with ultrasound.

Upper abdominal sonography is particularly important for the early detection of tumors in the abdominal cavity.

kidney or gallstones can be well represented with this method. The Hypertension A frequently occurring dangerous enlargement of the abdominal aorta (aortic aneurysm) can be detected early.

In most cases, the patient does not need to fast for an ultrasound examination of the abdominal cavity. The examination is painless and does not involve any radiation exposure.
