For women, statutory cancer screening includes an annual examination of the cervix with a smear test from the age of 20, an annual breast examination from the age of 30, and a mammogram every two years from the age of 50 to 70. While magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is becoming increasingly important for the early detection of breast cancer, this examination has so far had no significance as a preventive examination for the early detection of colon cancer.

Computed tomography or MRI colonography require additional imaging in one third of cases. colonoscopy due to unclear or questionable positive findings in the so-called virtual colonoscopy.

Efforts are being made to further develop cancer screening programs. However, it is particularly important that increased diagnostics do not lead to overdiagnosis or overtreatment.

Early detection of cancer is only useful in cases where early detection can improve the quality of life.
