Dimer

Concept Definition
Dimer

D-dimers are specific degradation products of fibrin.

The determination of the D-dimer antigen concentration in the blood is therefore an indicator of coagulation activation.

With the use of Dimer we are able to rule out venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in patients with symptoms such as chest or leg pain:

A negative dimer test is a clear and reliable exclusion criterion for thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. A D-dimer test as a first diagnostic step can help to avoid unnecessary diagnostics or treatments.
