Measurement of vascular elasticity using pulse wave velocity

Concept Definition
Measurement of vascular elasticity using pulse wave velocity

In order to assess the condition of the blood vessels, especially the presence of arteriosclerosis, a new examination method has been available for some time:

The augmentation index and the pulse wave propagation velocity are of particular importance here.

These two parameters can be used to make a statement about cardiovascular risk independently of traditional risk factors.

We get information about the elasticity of the arteries and thus about the extent of arteriosclerosis.

The higher the pulse wave velocity, the stiffer the vessel. The examination is painless and risk-free. It consists of a series of blood pressure and pulse wave measurements that are carried out in a lying position over a few minutes.

The European Heart League recommends this measurement in its latest guidelines on prevention early onset of arteriosclerosis.
