pulmonary function tests

Concept Definition
pulmonary function tests

When it comes to lung function, very sensitive sensors can measure the amount of air and the flow rate of exhaled air. This often makes it possible to diagnose lung changes before serious symptoms appear. In particular, diseases such as asthma Bronchial or spastic bronchitis can thus be safely diagnosed and treated.

We use a modern, so-called open spirometer with computer-assisted analysis.

The patient breathes through a breathing tube, and the breathing speed and flow rate of the air are determined electronically. The data is analyzed, evaluated and graphically displayed by a computer.

Lung function disorders usually begin gradually. All people over 30, including non-smokers, should therefore have their lung function measured regularly.

Smokers should have their FEV1 value measured at least once a year. This so-called forced expiratory volume is an early indicator of the development of chronic obstructive bronchitis, which often occurs in smokers. This allows the lung changes typical of smokers to be diagnosed before the onset of serious symptoms.

The examination takes about 5 minutes and requires no special preparation.
