H2 test for the diagnosis of food intolerances

Concept Definition
H2 test for the diagnosis of food intolerances

The H2 breath test is used to determine lactose intolerance or fructose intolerance.

With such a food intolerance, the body is not able to absorb such sugars in the small intestine.

The sugars come into contact with bacteria in the large intestine and cause symptoms such as a feeling of fullness, flatulence, stomach pain or diarrhea. Even symptoms such as tiredness, dizziness or depression can be the result of lactose intolerance or fructose intolerance.

For the lactose and fructose test, the patient must be fasting.

The doctors of the practice clinic in Bornheim use a special H2 breath test device to determine the increased formation of hydrogen gases (H2) that occurs in this food intolerance. This device is small and handy, and resembles an alcohol meter.

The values determined are entered into a protocol and then discussed with the patient. Two nutritionists who specialize in the treatment of food intolerances are part of the practice clinic team.
