Free radicals

Concept Definition
Free radicals

Free radicals are highly reactive atoms or molecules that have one or more free (unpaired) electrons.

The action characteristics of the very short-lived free radicals are determined by a high diffusion capacity in cells and tissues as well as a high reactivity with different atoms and molecules, which changes their structure and biological properties.

Cardiovascular diseases, the development of tumors, Diabetes and erectile dysfunction are just a few examples of diseases that are directly or indirectly associated with the effects of free radicals.

Above all, the role attributed to them in the aging process highlights their importance for the human organism.

However, diet allows the body to be supplied with substances that can intercept radicals. The so-called antioxidants play a particularly important role here.
