The profession of medicine is one of the oldest professions in the history of mankind. Initially, the art of healing was often practiced by priests. Their therapy was generally based on empirical medicine.

In Germany, a Doctor his license only after studying human medicine for at least 6 years.

A uniform licensing regulation for the whole of Germany regulates the training during medical studies. At the end there is a state examination. Specialists in internal medicine Medicine (Internists) must continue their training in this specialty of medicine for at least another six years before they can establish themselves as specialists.

Every doctor is required to be a member of the Medical Association, whereby the State Medical Association in whose area he or she practices is responsible.

In Germany, there are about 400 doctors tätig.

The Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians issues a license to treat patients covered by statutory health insurance. There are currently around 60 general practitioners and specialists. There are around 000 doctors working in hospitals. Alternative practitioners are also permitted to treat patients with restrictions. However, clearly defined limits must be observed.

In Austria, for example, the practice of medicine is reserved exclusively for doctors, and training to become a naturopath is even prohibited by the Medical Practitioners Act.

In Germany, too, doctors are not allowed to set up practice as alternative medicine practitioners at the same time.

A doctor may only consult a naturopath if the areas of responsibility remain separate - in this sense, cooperation between doctors and naturopaths is practically impossible in Germany. In the interest of protecting patients, mixing the profession of naturopath with that of doctor in one person is not permitted in the Federal Republic and is prohibited by law.
