Corona follow-up health check
study on long-term effects of Covid
We recommend that all patients with a COVID-19 infection undergo a thorough corona follow-up check approximately 10 days after the infection has subsided in order to detect secondary diseases such as myocarditis or lung damage at an early stage. After a corona infection, 10-20% of patients develop a secondary disease with persistent symptoms. If the symptoms persist for more than 4 weeks after the infection, it is referred to as long-COVID syndrome and if the symptoms persist for more than 12 weeks, it is referred to as post-COVID syndrome. In common parlance, both diseases are also simply referred to as long-COVID.
Symptoms of Long-/Post-COVID
The most common symptoms are: exhaustion syndrome (tiredness/fatigue), tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, cardiac arrhythmias, loss of smell and taste, muscle pain, headaches, cough, joint pain, thrombosis, abdominal pain, hair loss, insomnia, anxiety, depression, dizziness, lack of attention and concentration.
Therapy of Long-/Post-COVID Syndrome
There are proven therapies for the treatment of acute secondary diseases such as myocarditis or pneumonia. However, there is still no reliable information on the treatment of long COVID. Therefore, the primary goal should be to detect acute secondary diseases at an early stage. With long COVID, the main focus is currently on alleviating the symptoms and preventing them from becoming chronic. Most patients recover spontaneously or experience a significant relief of symptoms as the disease progresses. Taking ginkgo preparations can sometimes alleviate neurological symptoms and fatigue. There is also initial evidence that booster vaccinations can alleviate the symptoms. Therefore, even those who have recovered should get vaccinated in good time. An interval of 3 months after infection is recommended.
